As well as our daily maths, English and Reading sessions, we also learn through a theme-based curriculum using the ‘Cornerstone’ approach. This centres on the belief that children learn better when their interests and fascinations are allowed to flourish.
What we’re learning
In the first half term of the academic year, we will be motivating our children through the topic ‘Towers, Tunnels and Turrets’. Would you like to look at the castle ahead and see its mighty walls? Do you know any world famous towers and tunnels? Within this topic you will have lots of fun creating models of your own and learning about important places all around the world.
Our second topic is called ‘Street Detectives’. This is all about our local community. Come and enjoy a walk around the village with your friends. Can you see old and new buildings? How are the streets different from long ago? Learn to create maps and give directions. Take part in traffic surveys and make comparisons. What do you like in Hockley Heath and how can the area be improved?
‘Land Ahoy!’ is our topic this half term. Get your sea legs on, it’s time to sail the salty seas. Navigate, investigate and explore just like Captain Cook. Within this topic we design, make and test our own products. We learn about famous sea explorers and ships that have been created. Can you name any? Enjoy making your own light house using an electrical circuit and have fun singing sea shanties.
Spring 2/Summer 1
This term we focus on the topic ‘Muck, Mess and Mixtures’. Let’s get messy! Muck and mess is good! In fact, it’s mega-marvellous. Pour, mix, stir, splat! How does it feel to get your hands covered in goo? Find out what creates the best bubbles? What melts the quickest? Create fair tests to explore and find out answers. Don’t worry about the mess, let’s have fun!
Our final topic of the year is called ‘Beachcombers’. We take a peek into the cool water to learn about the weird and wonderful animals and plants that live there. Have fun researching, inventing, making and investigating both individually and as part of a team. This term you will go on a school trip to learn more about habitats and micro-habitats.
